“I know the capacity that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency [the National Security Agency] and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision, so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return.” — Senator Frank Church (1975)
I would like to discuss four major and badly understood events – the John F. Kennedy assassination, Watergate, Iran-Contra, and 9/11. I will analyze these deep events as part of a deeper political process linking them, a process that has helped build up repressive power in America at the expense of democracy. In recent years I have been talking about a dark force behind these events — a force which, for want of a better term, I have clumsily called a “deep state,” operating both within and outside the public state. Today for the first time I want to identify part of that dark force, a part which has operated for five decades or more at the edge of the public state. This part of the dark force has a name not invented by me: the Doomsday Project, the Pentagon’s name for the emergency planning “to keep the White House and Pentagon running during and after a nuclear war or some other major crisis.”1My point is a simple and important one: to show that the Doomsday Project of the 1980s, and the earlier emergency planning that developed into it, have played a role in the background of all the deep events I shall discuss.More significantly, it has been a factor behind all three of the disturbing events that now threaten American democracy. The first of these three is what has been called the conversion of our economy into a plutonomy – with the increasing separation of America into two classes, into the haves and the have-nots, the one percent and the 99 percent. The second is America’s increasing militarization, and above all its inclination, which has become more and more routine and predictable, to wage or provoke wars in remote regions of the globe. It is clear that the operations of this American war machine have served the one percent.2The third – my subject today — is the important and increasingly deleterious impact on American history of structural deep events: mysterious events, like the JFK assassination, the Watergate break-in, or 9/11, which violate the American social structure, have a major impact on American society, repeatedly involve law-breaking or violence, and in many cases proceed from an unknown dark force. …

The conventional view of the Iran-Contra scandal is that it covered the period 1985-86, when President Ronald Reagan became concerned about the fate of American hostages in Lebanon and agreed to secretly sell weapons to Iran’s Islamist government to gain its help in freeing the captives.Supposedly, the scheme went awry when White House aide Oliver North and other participants got carried away, including North’s decision to divert profits from the arms sales to another one of Reagan’s priorities, the Nicaraguan contra rebels whose CIA assistance had been cut off by Congress. The Iran-Contra scandal was exposed in fall of 1986 after the shooting down of a North supply plane over Nicaragua and revelations in Lebanon of Reagan’s arms sales to Iran. A White House staff shake-up, including North’s firing, and some wrist-slaps from Congress for Reagan’s alleged inattention to details resolved the scandal, at least that was how Official Washington saw it.The few dissenters who wouldn’t accept that tidy conclusion – such as Iran-Contra special prosecutor Lawrence Walsh – were mocked and marginalized by the news media, including the Washington Post (which ran an article concluding that Walsh’s consistency in pursuing the scandal was “so un-Washington” and that he would depart as “a perceived loser”).But an accumulating body of evidence suggests that the traditional view of Iran-Contra was mistaken, that this conventional understanding of the scandal was like starting a novel in the middle and assuming you’re reading the opening chapter.Indeed, it now appears clear that the Iran-Contra Affair began five years earlier in 1980, with what has often been treated as a separate controversy, called the October Surprise case, dealing with alleged contacts between Reagan’s presidential campaign and Iran….

Guns and Butter was again censored by the staff at KPFA. On Wednesday, May 18, 2016, we had planned to go on live for the current KPFA Fund Drive and offer Dissolving Illusions: Vaccination Past and Present by Dr. Suzanne Humphries and Roman Bystrianyk. However, on Tuesday we were notified by the Program Director at KPFA, Laura Prives, that our show would not air and instead be preempted. The following is the full text of her email:
The book Dissolving Illusions is not KPFA fund drive premium material.
We will have to preempt your show tomorrow.
KPFA follows basic ethical standards for choosing thank you gifts presented to listeners, that is, to tell the truth and do no harm. Thank you gifts must be vetted for authenticity. Offering thank you gifts that contain unverified claims, such as cancer cures or fully discredited theories, such as a link between autism and vaccinations, violate basic ethical standards. Thank you gifts offering cures for life-threatening diseases or those validating unsubstantiated fears on controversial topics will undoubtedly be popular and are likely to bring in a large amount of donations. This is all the more reason to avoid “cashing in” and to hold to ethical standards.
Debates and discussions on this type of information outside of fund drives are certainly justifiable in order to present listeners with a full scope of a topic. But when KPFA offers books, CDs and DVDs during fund drive there is an implied endorsement of the information in that gift. For the same reason KPFA does not offer thank you gifts of items by political candidates during election season. The thank you gift implies an endorsement of the candidate. As a trusted media outlet KPFA has a responsibility to offer thank you gifts that are as credible and unbiased as is its daily reporting and public affairs broadcasting.
Thanks for your cooperation,
It seems that Free-Speech Radio is not so free and instead fails to address this topic in an honest and open manner. …
