We’re being hit with a double-whammy: Wages are under deflationary pressure, and almost everything else is exposed to inflationary pressure.
As correspondent Mark G. observed in Globalization = Permanent Instability, it’s impossible to understand inflation and deflation now except in a global context.
Now that prices for commodities such as oil and grain are set on the global market, local surpluses don’t push prices down. If North America has record harvests of grain, on a national basis we’d expect prices to fall as local supply exceeds local demand.
But since grain is tradable, i.e. it can be shipped to other markets where demand and thus prices are much higher, the price in North America reflects supply and demand everywhere on the planet, not just in North America.
If we put ourselves in the shoes of a farmer or grain wholesaler, this is a boon: why sell your product for 1X locally, when it fetches 2X in other countries? You’d be crazy not to put it on a boat and get double the price elsewhere.
As the share of the economy exposed to digitization increases, so does the share of work that can be done anywhere on the planet. When work is digitized, it is effectively commoditized, meaning that it no longer matters who performs the work or where they live.
If people in countries with low wages can perform the work, why on Earth would you pay double to have high-wage people do the work? It makes no sense. Taking advantage of the differences in local pay scales is called labor arbitrage, as the employer is trading on (i.e. arbitraging) two sets of prices.
It’s not just labor that can be arbitraged: currency, interest rates, risk, environmental regulations, commodities–huge swaths of the global economy can be arbitraged.
The basic idea of the global carry trade is to borrow money cheaply in a currency that’s weakening and use the money to buy low-risk, high-yield assets in currencies that are gaining in relative value….
On October 30th, the Novorossian press agency announced that on the prior day, Ukrainian troops had resumed their heavy shelling of towns in the former Luhansk and Donetsk Republics, two regions which had been joined together as a new nation Novorussia, and which had originally been Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk administrative districts, bordering with Russia.
This shelling went way beyond merely violating the ceasefire agreement, and the Ukrainian Government was now in open and public violation of it, and in public contempt of it. Ukraine had signed in Minsk Belarus an agreement on September 5th, the Minsk Protocol, along with the leaders of those two breakaway regions, and also with Russia’s Ukrainian Ambassador, and with the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) as the monitor of compliance with this agreement. However, now, the Ukrainian Government is no longer pretending to be complying with it. On October 29th, Russia’s RIA Novosti press agency bannered, ”Kiev Withdraws From Delineation Agreement With East Ukraine: DPR,” and reported that “Kiev has withdrawn from the delineation agreement it signed with Donetsk authorities without any explanation, the deputy prime minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) said.” There was no announcement yet from the Ukrainian Government, however. …
If “flu-bola” was developed along with a vaccine for it, it would explain a lot. If this virus is something new, it’s implausible that a vaccine would already be in the testing phase unless they already knew how it functioned because they developed it.
Right? What would the secret government get out of it?
July of this year, President Obama signed into law an amendment to the Executive Order 13295, which redefines who can be quarantined and why. This does not bode well for a nation that could potentially face an Ebola pandemic. It smacks of pre-meditated bio-warfare and martial law on a nation’s own citizens.
This means that any police officer or ‘health official’ can, without question, and on suspicion alone, quarantine someone simply for showing any sign of ‘respiratory illness.’ None other than the war-mongering Bush Administration, first put the order into place, originally meant to quarantine victims of SARS. Ebola just happened to be listed on the original executive order, too, signed by Bush. But now, with the exception of influenza, Americans can be detained for any health concern, including Ebola, even if it is not named as such.
When you add to this the fact that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) already has measures in place for dealing with an outbreak of a communicable disease which allows for the quarantine of “well persons” who “do not show symptoms” of the disease, then Americans need to pay some serious attention to what is happening to their civil rights.
Furthermore, under the Model State Emergency Health Powers Act, public health authorities and governors would be given expanded police powers to seize control of communications devices, public and private property, as well as a host of other Orwellian measures in the event of a public health emergency.
There is only one infected person in Dallas for now, but 80 more are under surveillance by the CDC. What do you suppose our criminal government has planned for the other thousands of cities in the U.S.? The issue does not revolve around taking measures to prevent an outbreak in the nation; if done with the true, sincere intention of protection, then without infringing on civil rights, that would be OK. The issue is when power is exercised at a dictator level. …
Quick, somebody get me some psych drugs, I must be out of my mind to think the people who exported our industrial infrastructure abroad and then deliberately imploded the economy (after shorting it) would stoop so low as to import a pandemic (real or imaginary) just to justify a police state takeover.
The fact is you don’t have to speculate about any of this. Just ask yourself what they expected to happen when americans figure out how they’ve been sold down the river. Is it possible they didn’t think about the likely fallout from the banksters’ wholesale looting of the country?
No. Sorry, it’s not possible. AT ALL. Wishful thinking and implausible deniability aside, they know exactly what they’re doing. It’s as plain as the nose on your face. They profited handsomely while they looted and they are well positioned to profit even more when people are desperate to sell everything they own just to stay alive. They are criminals and criminals will do anything to stay on top, because they know that if they slip, they’ll be hanging from a rope.
The real culprit here is american metasin. No one in his right mind would believe monsanto to be a trusthworthy custodian of children’s nutrition. American metasin, on the other hand, has long gotten a free pass as the authority of last resort wrt children’s health, and as a result generations of american children have not only been starved of essential immunological, hormonal and neuro-developmental health factors found only in human breast milk, but they’ve missed out on the human intimacy of breast feeding from their mothers. This is a particularly despicable form of institutional predation as it is, but now we find that our ever resourceful corporate predators are exploiting the wedge metasin has driven between mothers and babies to actually poison children. From circumcision to obstetrical abuse to formula feeding to psychiatric drugging to hyper-vaccination, american metasin has been an unmitigated disaster for children. Let them go back to setting bones, something their reductionist, mechanistic ideology can comprehend.
Just as Oregonians are voting on whether to label genetically engineered foods, Center for Food Safety (CFS) announced today that genetic testing has confirmed the presence of soy that has been genetically engineered by Monsanto for heavy pesticide exposure in infant formula that is being sold in Portland, Oregon. The testing was coordinated between CFS and Dr. Ray Seidler, the first EPA scientist to study genetically engineered crops (now retired) and former professor at Oregon State University. With recent published studies confirming that genetically engineered soy has significantly higher levels of chemical herbicides than conventionally grown soy, the test findings raise concerns about increasing infant exposure to chemical herbicides. The testing follows up on a recent nationwide study by Consumer Reports finding genetically engineered ingredients in more than 80 common food products.
“I think most moms purchasing infant formula have no idea they are feeding their baby a product that has been genetically engineered to survive exposure to high levels of chemical pesticides,” says Aurora Paulsen with Center for Food Safety’s Portland office. “It’s no surprise that Monsanto is the top donor opposing Measure 92 which would give Oregonians the ability to know what foods have been genetically engineered. The presence of these products in infant formula being sold in Oregon really highlights the need for basic labeling.”…
The U.S. Air Force says it is not halting its use of Depleted Uranium weapons, has recently sent them to the Middle East, and is prepared to use them.
A type of airplane, the A-10, deployed this month to the Middle East by the U.S. Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing, is responsible for more Depleted Uranium (DU) contamination than any other platform, according to the International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons (ICBUW). “Weight for weight and by number of rounds more 30mm PGU-14B ammo has been used than any other round,” said ICBUW coordinator Doug Weir, referring to ammunition used by A-10s, as compared to DU ammunition used by tanks.
Public affairs superintendent Master Sgt. Darin L. Hubble of the 122nd Fighter Wing told me that the A-10s now in the Middle East along with “300 of our finest airmen” have been sent there on a deployment planned for the past two years and have not been assigned to take part in the current fighting in Iraq or Syria, but “that could change at any moment.”
Remember when doctors and scientists told us cigarettes were safe, with doctors even showing up on commercials puffing away? Or how about when Vietnam Vets were told that being sprayed with Agent Orange wouldn’t cause them any significant health problems? The ‘studies’ supported by biotech on GMOs have been suspected of being falsified in one way or another, and now there is an independent, peer-reviewed study to prove it.
Many believe that if enough individuals think there is enough ‘proof’ that GMOs are perilous, then the U.S. government will have no choice but to stop biotech companies like Monsanto from making them, but I believe this is an erroneous assumption.
A growing number of people are starting to think that the U.S. government is using flawed science on purpose to justify centralized manufacture, production, storage, and distribution of an altered world food supply to be used for political power and international rule. If we don’t eat our GMOs, take our vaccines, and assent to being sprayed with chemtrails while our municipal water is being poisoned, then their aims will be supported by our military and police forces.
Until we oust practically every criminal in office, including those who are about to run for office (i.e. Hilary Clinton, who cheerleads for biotech), we will continue to have this problem.
In a recent study that reviewed the histopathology on rats who ate three of the most predominantly consumed GMO genes by humans, the following was surmised:
“Our review also discovered an inconsistency in methodology and a lack of defined criteria for outcomes that would be considered toxicologically or pathologically significant. In addition, there was a lack of transparency in the methods and results, which made comparisons between the studies difficult. The evidence reviewed here demonstrates an incomplete picture regarding the toxicity (and safety) of GM products consumed by humans and animals.
Therefore, each GM product should be assessed on merit, with appropriate studies performed to indicate the level of safety associated with them. Detailed guidelines should be developed which will allow for the generation of comparable and reproducible studies. This will establish a foundation for evidence-based guidelines, to better determine if GM food is safe for human and animal consumption.”
Furthermore, the significant differences between say non-GMO corn, which contains well – corn, and GMO corn which may contain E coli bacteria, antibiotic resistant markers, up to six varieties of Bt toxins, pesticide residues, and RoundUp residues, how can these crops be compared to regular food at all?
“…found 21 studies for nine (19%) out of the 47 crops approved for human and/or animal consumption. We could find no studies on the other 38 (81%) approved crops. Fourteen out of the 21 studies (67%) were general health assessments of the GM crop on rat health. Most of these studies (76%) were performed after the crop had been approved for human and/or animal consumption, with half of these being published at least nine years after approval. Our review also discovered an inconsistency in methodology and a lack of defined criteria for outcomes that would be considered toxicologically or pathologically significant.”GMOs are not safe. It’s about time we wake up to the reality that biotech and the U.S. government won’t listen to a single study saying they are cancerous, cause birth defects, or destroy human embryo cells. It’s time we take a different track altogether. You can assess what you and your family should do in such a hostile environment where our food is concerned.
