Greenland’s ice disappears: What does it mean?

It may have been a surprise to some people at NASA but there’s no way it would have been a surprise to anyone with temperature sensors embedded in the ice.   The way it works is that as thermal energy is absorbed by ice, the temperature rises in proportion to the calories absorbed.  That’s what specific heat is all about.  But when it reaches the melting point (0 degrees C) all the energy goes into melting, not temperature increase.  Ice near 0 degrees has a specific heat of about 0.5 cal/gm, but it takes about 80 cal/gm to change ice to water, so there would have been a huge plateau in the temperature curve where the temperature would have stayed constant at 0.  In other words, it’s very unlikely that this would have taken anyone by surprise who was paying attention.   In real life the ice sheet has been eroding for some time, but even if ice conducted heat perfectly so the entire sheet was at the same temperature at all times, the temperature plateau would have been there.  Even satellites can take thermal readings.  So the question is, why pretend that it was a surprise?   And why wasn’t this predictable event in the news well before it happened?  One would think that ocean going vessels would want to know about it due to possible tidal effects, icebergs etc.  It must have taken some effort to keep this out of the news before it happened.

The journalist also states that it melted more than has been seen in 33 years of satellite imagery.   Sounds like a long time to a young person I guess.  But then we see this:

“Melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time” — Lora Koenig Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center

So what can we draw from all this?   The powers that be really really want to convince us that we’re on the edge of a precipice, and this entirely predictable “surprise” serves that purpose well.   The question is whether we really are.  Let me stress that I don’t know.  What I do know is that the proposed remedies for the AGW hypothesis amount to deindustrialization and genocide on a vast scale, and depopulation and a global “carbon tax” are very much at the heart of the globalization project.

If the powers that be want to be taken seriously about a serious subject, they might try not treating us like idiots.   But it’s a bit late for that in any case, 9/11 blew whatever credibility they might have had, so we’re on our own.  I must say the current drought and heat wave in missouri doesn’t fill me with confidence, but it also has precedence in the dust bowl years of the 1930’s.

Do your own research.  There’s a heck of a lot of disagreement among climatologists if you scratch below the wall-to-wall propaganda.
